Handwriting is a functional skill and is essential to many areas of life, such as academic progression, communication between friends or family, or generating a list. There are multiple facets of handwriting that contribute to the creation of a word or sentence, fine motor coordination or motor planning, strength, cognition, visual motor integration, and sensory processing.
To help regain control of hands and fingers, place coins on a table away from the individual and have them pick up the coins one at a time.
In order to regain gripping ability, have the individual squeeze a stress ball in their writing hand.
To aid in increasing finger movement, place a rubber band around the fingers of the weak hand, with the fingers close together, then have them spread out their fingers as far as possible and close them again.
Practice picking up a pen and holding it while “air writing”
When ready to write start with having the focus on writing their name or short words accurately first on lined paper with dots.
A specially designed pen, one with an attached base that helps to keep the hand steady, offering balance, guidance, and stabilization such as a weighted pen with a grip is an excellent tool to help aid in the relearning handwriting stage.
