Name: Balance and Coordination to Increase Body Awareness Module I
Body awareness is the sense of our own bodies. It is an understanding of the parts that make up one's body, where they are located, how they feel, and even what they can do. Body awareness is the internal understanding of where the body is in space.
Body Awareness Techniques
Play with a large ball
Have the individual kick the ball, using one foot and then the other. Then throw the ball and catch it too.
Ride a bike
Encourage the individual to ride a bike
Understanding spatial relations
Encourage the individual to understand spatial relations, ask them to stand in front of a chair, behind a chair, next to the chair etc.
Improve lateral movement
To develop sense of laterality, have the individual kneel on the floor, then instruct to turn to lift the left hand, the right leg etc. Yoga moves can also be a great way to work on this.
Work on balance
Encourage the individual to balance on one leg, and then the other for as long as possible. Use balance beams or “walk the line” with a piece of painter’s tape on the floor.
Focus on proprioception (Heavy Work Ideas)
This provides input of how the muscles, joints, head and trunk move and work.
Massages, yoga poses, pulling resistance bands with hands, wall pushes, air dips, squeezing clay/play dough, cooking activities (kneading dough), rolling a therapy ball up/down the wall
