SKU: OMKCSICOT

Solution Plan:

Children with sensory needs or may be Autistic, therefore, oral sensory input can play an important role. Chewing throughout the day (especially during times of stress / anxiety) can help the child calm, focus, and self-regulate.

  • Don’t force them to stop

  • Give them a safe outlet to chew (chewie) - Chewie’s are specifically created for this purpose and are still some of our most popular chew tools.  There are several types of chewlery options for more discreet on-the-go chewing.  They all look like regular jewelry but are chewable.

  • Get to the root as to “why” the child is putting items in mouth- The most common explanation for why some children chew is because of stress or anxiety.  Chewing provides proprioceptive input to the jaw that is very calming and organizing.  It’s how some children bite their fingernails when they’re nervous, or pace back and forth, do deep breathing or tap a foot/finger.

  • Sensory Diet

  • Gum Massages- Gum massage can sometimes help decrease the need to chew by providing oral input in a different way.  It’s a very simple yet often very effective activity.

  • Incorporate Oral Activities into daily routine - Have the child blow through whistles, drink through straws, blow cotton balls across the table, etc.  Put bubble mixture in some water and have them blow bubbles with a fun straw.

  • Use Curvy Bendy Twisting Straws to make it harder to suck.  Drinking thickened liquids through the straw (like applesauce, milkshakes, yogurt, etc.) can also increase the resistance and make the mouth work harder.

  • Have the child bite down on the chewie of choice and hold for several seconds. Also, gently tug on the chew tool while they hold it in place between their teeth.

  • Add harder to chew items into diet (carrots, pretzels, apple), of course use products that child can have to incorporate (allergies)

  • Use vibration as an electric toothbrush

  • Implement heavy work activities (pulling a wagon, cleaning the table, emptying the garbage etc.)
